Diarrhea

Diarrhea means an increased wateriness, frequency or quantity of the defecation. It is not really a disease but rather a symptom of various diseases. The increased loss of fluid and salts by the increased excretion may lead dehydration especially of elderly people and children.

Diarrhea is common for not yet diagnosed children who suffer from celiac disease. Foul-smelling, bulky, mushy diarrhea is one of the symptoms of celiac disease and it is caused by the insufficient capacity of the affected small intestine and the resulting inflammation of the intestine. After a period of strict, gluten-free diet celiac-related diarrhea is no longer observed.
