Villous atrophy

A villous atrophy is defined as the flattening of the normally tightly folded duodenal villi. This can be caused by a gluten-containing diet. The intestinal mucosa is then no longer able to adequately absorb many nutrients from food, leading to the typical celiac symptoms of deficiency.
