Prevalence of celiac disease
The prevalence of celiac disease has increased in recent years. About 20 years ago the prevalence was between 1:4000 and 1:5000, today it is between 1:100 and 1:500.
The classification of different forms of celiac disease and the unreported cases of celiac disease have led to the term "iceberg phenomenon" of celiac disease. Just the tip of the iceberg of celiac disease is currently diagnosed - actually 1:1000. The worldwide prevalence of celiac disease, however, is estimated at 1:100 to 1:500. There are seven undiagnosed celiacs in every diagnosed celiac.
