Genetic predisposition
Celiac disease is a disease that might be caused by an underlying genetic predisposition. However, so far no single gene could be clearly identified as a trigger. The hypothesis is strengthened by the fact that about ten percent of all celiacs have first degree relatives who also suffer from this disease.
It must be considered that celiacs who want to have children might pass the disease on to their children. For this reason, the supply of gluten-containing food for in infants should be discussed with physicians and, where appropriate, waived in some cases.
